Diabetes and dental health

Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood is too high. People with poorly controlled diabetes are more susceptible to infection and don’t heal as fast or effectively as people with very well controlled diabetes or people without the condition.

There are a few ways you can help to protect your gums, teeth and mouth from suffering severe issues like gum disease when you have diabetes. These include:

  • Control your blood glucose levels – people who take care of themselves and their glucose levels respond better to treatment.
  • Properly care for and clean your teeth and gums. Dental hygiene is important for everyone, but will also help prevent dental problems for people with diabetes.
  • Get regular checks at your family dentist in Geelong and make an appointment earlier if you feel like something might be wrong.
