Dental fear and phobias

Dental Phobia

The fear of the dentist or dental treatment is a common problem which we encounter on a daily basis. We want you to know that for us, managing dental fear is perfectly OK. Anxiety and fear of the dentist has been around as long as the practice of dentistry so it essentially is part of what we do.

It is estimated 75% of people experience some degree of anxiety when visiting the dentist. There is a small portion of these people (5%) who experience extreme dental phobia which is a concern as this may create some serious health issues.

Managing Anxiety

For our team it is important that you feel relaxed and comfortable while under our care. At Dentalspa Geelong we aim to provide you with the best care to alleviate any fears or anxiety you may have. Our operators are gentle and caring with a fantastic chair-side manner. We aim to provide a space which is comfortable and relaxing for you and is more like a health spa than a dental office. We want you to feel at home and relaxed by creating an environment where all your needs are addressed.

It is in the interest of us as well as our patients that you are calm and relaxed throughout your treatment and time here with us.  With so many advancements in dental technology it is now very simple to maintain patient comfort throughout any treatment.

Prevention is Key

Preventative care is essential in eliminating the need for invasive treatment.  For those who experience dental phobias it may difficult to commit to routine preventative care appointments twice a year. However if dental care is neglected it can often make simple treatments more extensive or invasive. This may create further anxiety which is not ideal for you or us.

If you have any fear or anxiety when it comes to your dental health we want you to communicate with us. Dental phobia is nothing to be ashamed of and if there is anything we can do to make your experiences more comfortable we want to know. Knowing what triggers your anxiety will help us come up with a plan to make your visits easier and more relaxed.
